Lestat's mother Gabrielle was dying so in order to save her he gave her the dark gift. He met up with coven with the leader Armand who told him what he knew of vampires and about his maker Maruis. Armand wanted to travel with Gabrielle and Lestat but they refused and this angered him.
The Coven had kidnapped Nicolas and he was at the point of death due to the fact the coven had drained him so Lestat gave Nicolas the dark gift but this turned him mad and he jumped into the fire to kill himself. He then parted company with Garbrielle.
Lestat had heard rumours about old vampires and one name he looked for was Maruis Armand's maker.
He found him or rather he found him after 10 years just after he had gone under ground after the death of Nicolas and Gabrielle leaving him.

Lestat knew that Luis was going to stray from him soon so in order to keep him he made Claudia who was 5 at the time she had the dark gift.
Fo over 70 years they lived together as an little vampire family then Claudia rebelled against Lestat blaming him for the fact she would never be an woman.
Lestat was left for dead in an swamp but made his way back to the house where he was set alight by Louis.
After an few years he gained the strengle to make his way to Paris and to visit Armand he refused to give him his healing blood.
